ABSTRACT

The Relation between Work Environment and Leadership Style with Personnel’s Work Satisfaction at the Finance Bureau of the State Secretariat. A Thesis of Postgraduate Program for Master of Management, Muhammadiyah University of Jakarta, 2006

The objective of the research is to examine: (1) relation between work environment and personnel’s work satisfaction; (2) relation between leadership style and personnel’s work satisfaction; and (3) relation between both work environment and leadership style concurrently with personnel’s work satisfaction.

The research was conducted on December 2005. This associative research aims to explain the status of variables observed and the relation among those variables. Three variables of this study are: work environment (X1) and leadership style (X2) as independent variable, and personnel’s work satisfaction (Y) as dependent variable. In order to obtain data of those variables, 47 people were observed as a sample (based on error level of 5%) from all 54 personnel of the Finance Bureau, the State Secretariat.

The results of this research show that: (1) There is a positive and significant correlation between work environment and personnel’s work satisfaction, which described by correlation coefficient r = 0.7221, through a simple regression equation model Y = 16.4112 + 0.5913 X1; (2) There is a positive and significant correlation between leadership style and personnel’s work satisfaction, which described by correlation coefficient r = 0.4969, through a simple regression equation model Y = 31.6914 + 0.4127 X2; and (3) There is a positive and significant correlation between both work environment and leadership style concurrently toward personnel’s work satisfaction, which described by the score of double correlation coefficient 0.7332 which is much bigger than r table 0.288 and determination coefficient (R square) = 0.537556 through a double regression equation model Y = 14.2950 + 0.5246 X1 + 0.1251 X2.

The significant test of double correlation coefficient shows that F count is 68695.8333 and F table is 3.20. As F count > F table, so Ho is rejected, which means that there is an influence of both work environment and leadership style concurrently toward personnel’s work satisfaction, and it could be empirically proved.
